New Book Traces Link between Emerging Church and Old-School Church Traditions
(New York, NY) – While the emerging church might look to some like a contemporary worship movement born in the evangelical world, in fact, it has deep roots in historic, liturgical traditions.
“All along, the emerging church – or fresh expressions of church, as the movement is known in the UK – has drawn on sacramental church traditions,” said The Rev. Stephanie Spellers, Priest and Lead Organizer for The Crossing, the emerging community at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Boston, and US-based editor of a new book highlighting sacramental perspectives on the emergent movement. “We love those traditions and practices enough to translate them for postmodern life.”
Ancient Faith, Future Mission:
Fresh Expressions in the Sacramental Traditions
Steven Croft, Ian Mobsby, Stephanie Spellers, editors
978-1-59627-124-1 | $22.00 | Paper | 192 pages | 5.25 x 8.5 | Seabury Books
**Review copies, interviews, and excerpts available on request.**
A collaboration between leaders in the UK and the US, the book features pieces from grassroots practitioners, theologians, and and church leaders with a balcony viewpoint, including Rowan Williams, Brian McLaren, Phyllis Tickle, and Katherine Jefferts Schori. Additional contributors include Ian Mosby and Ian Adams, Thomas Brackett, Stephen Cottrell, Richard Giles, Carl Turner, Sue Wallace, Paige Blair, Michael Volland, Philip Roderick and Tessa Holland, Stephanie Spellers, Christopher Ashley, Marie Harkey and Kristen Wesselhoeft, Simon Rundell, Karen Ward, and Abbot Stuart Burns.
“In this timely and practical book, pioneers and leaders from the United States and England tell their stories and offer reflections on building a future-focused, mission-shaped church that is deeply rooted in ancient faith traditions,” said Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, in an endorsement.
“Many clergy, musicians, lay leaders and youth ministers have been excited about ‘emergent’, but they worry that it’s just praise music, projectors, and candles,” Spellers said. “We needed a resource that makes the link, one that captures the emerging movement by taking sacramental, ancient traditions as the starting point, and then explores what’s emerging from there. This book is essential reading for leaders seeking to translate sacramental traditions for mission in today’s world.”

Confirm not Conform Launches New Website
For Immediate Release January 29, 2010
Contact: Bill Falvey, 917-373-8510, wfalvey@cpg.org
Church Publishing,
(
The site –www.confirmnotconform.com – does not merely convey information in a static form, but allows conversation and interaction among experienced and new users of the CnC program.
“We’re very excited about the possibilities for making an online community for CnC users,” said Laura Toepfer, Managing Director of Confirm not Conform. “As with everything we do, this is not about us having the right answers, but instead encouraging everyone to share their voice. This website will allow people to do that.”
Among the newest features on the website are a blog written by the creative team that developed Confirm not Conform, and a forum that is open to all. The forum has discussion boards on which people can share tips on how to use a particular lesson or can join with other people in similar situations, such as youth leaders in small churches.
A free downloadable information booklet and secure online ordering are additional new features. Visitors can also download a sample lesson and a student essay.
The student essay is “one of my favorite additions to the site,” said Bill Gnegy, marketing manager for Morehouse Education Resources, a division of Church Publishing Incorporated. “It’s titled ‘I Was Actually Happy My Mom Made Me Do This,’ which captures in a nutshell the unique youth appeal of this progressive program.”
Existing users of CnC will be sent an email with instructions on getting log-in and password information for restricted areas of the website. New customers will automatically receive their log-ins with their CnC purchase. CnC program files are downloadable from the website with the purchase of the program.
Rather than imparting information from the outside, Confirm not Conform explores the beliefs and questions that come from the students themselves. The debate and discussion sparked by the students ignite their faith into something lively and real. CnC takes the idealism and skepticism that co-exist in young people and uses that energy to help youth become engaged with their faith and their community.
In addition to 16 class sessions, CnC students go on field trips, attend a weekend-long retreat, work with mentors, participate in liturgies, and design and implement a service project as a team. The program is designed to accommodate a range of congregational settings, from a handful of youth to a huge congregation, and the program is priced accordingly.
Confirm not Conform celebrates young people’s spirituality, creativity and responsibility. Over the course of the CnC program, students realize the church is serious about giving them a voice and, when they claim it, the results are amazing.
Confirm not Conform is now used in more 150 Episcopal congregations, with more than 100 new user churches joining the program since last summer, when Church Publishing Incorporated became the formal distributor and publishing partner in the program. Coming later this year is the adult version of Confirm not Conform, set to release in March, 2010.
Review materials, interviews, and excerpts from Confirm not Conform are available at the request of Episcopal media. Confirm not Conform can be ordered on www.confirmnotconform.com or by calling 800-242-1918.

Church Publishing Responds to Tight Economy
(
“Most businesses expect payment in 30 days, and we typically are no exception,” said Mark Dazzo, CPI vice president of sales and marketing. “However, with the significant challenges being posed by our economy – especially for churches, and at this busy time in the church year – we hope to relieve some budgetary pressures by providing 90-day terms on purchases between now and year’s end for our core institutional customers.”
In view of the recent market volatility, CPI addressed the need for an immediate response to its church customers during strategic meetings in
The extended terms are applicable on any and all purchases from Church Publishing Incorporated, including Episcopal Church staples such as the Book of Common Prayer and the 1982 Hymnal, Singers Edition. It extends to include all curriculum offerings from Morehouse Education Resources, including the popular Godly Play Christian formation program, plus the comprehensive offerings from Morehouse Church Supplies.
To take advantage of the extended terms, churches must cite promo code _________ on all orders totaling $400 or more placed between now and the end of the year through the customer service department at (phone) 800-242-1918, (fax) 717-541-8136, or (mail) 4775 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112. The offer is available to any church or congregation. CPI will reinstate its normal payment terms on January 1, 2009, although it reserves the right to change the terms of this offer at anytime.
Church leaders are encouraged to browse CPI’s new website, www.churchpublishing.org, to see the latest product offerings. In addition, CPI will highlight the extended payment terms in its popular Christmas catalog to be mailed to churches later this month.
