This biography of the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury traces the story of Welby's life and ministry from his earliest years to the eve of his enthronement in March 2013.  It examines his conversation to Christianity as a student at Cambridge University, his career as a treasurer in the oil industry and his meteoric rise through the ranks of the Church of England - as rector in Warwickshire, director international reconciliation ministry at Coventry Cathedral, dean of Liverpool and bishop of Durham. It highlights Welby's passion for evangelism, reconciliation and risk-taking, which mark a change of direction for the Anglican Communion.

Andrew Atherstone is tutor in History and Doctrine and Latimer research fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has published widely on a number of Anglican figures, such as Charles Golightly and George Carey.

“Atherstone offers a glimpse of the formative influences in Welby’s call to Augustine’s seat, and the resulting gifts we can expect to see in abundance in coming years:  decisiveness, collegiality, and skilled management from the business world; shared mission as the route to reconciliation; the ministry of a servant willing to risk all for life in Christ; and a non-tribal identity that is radically free to consort with any and all in the search for reconciliation.  We should not be surprised at this Archbishop’s offer of any risky and courageous initiative toward the dream of God.”
—The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop, The Episcopal Church
