FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is eCP?

electronic Common Prayer (eCP) is an app that has been optimized for all iPad, iPhone and Android devices.

eCP contains the most commonly used services from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, in an interactive format that includes Bookmarking, e-mail, and AirPrint support. It contains the full texts of the lectionary for the Eucharist (RCL), Daily Office, and Lesser Feasts and Fasts.

Does eCP require an internet connection?
eCP requires NO INTERNET connection, as all texts are stored locally on your device, allowing you access to these texts no matter where you go.

What is the difference between eCP and the Book of Common Prayer ebook?
Given current technology, there are a variety of ways to offer the same content in different contexts. The BCP ebook presents the contents of the Book of Common Prayer in a format suitable for reading and study. Because ebooks are designed to work on a variety of devices, the way in which the text flows on the screen is dependent on the device you are using.

For this reason, ebooks generally do not present content in a way that mirrors the layout of the print edition. PDFs can do this, and we offer a PDF version of the 1979 BCP that is suitable for a wide range of devices.

Tablet and ebook readers offer a wide variety of features that make ebooks attractive. The software that some tablet devices provide for reading ebooks also offers specific features. These features include things like bookmarking, highlighting, annotating, and often hyperlinked Tables of Contents, indexes and search features.

What makes eCP different?
eCP offers a more interactive way to access the content for which you are looking. Hyperlinked content within the services provided allows you to access material referenced in rubrics, Rite 1 and Rite 2 variants of the creeds, referenced prayers, etc. Built in indexes allow you to search specific content such as Psalms or Prayers and Thanksgivings for key words in the content.

Because it is a calendar driven app, the Today button is always available to let you read the Propers available for any given day. Additionally, eCP makes navigation easy and sharing content possible with the click of a button.

What about other apps that are similar but free?
There are a variety of other "BCP" apps available. However, there are some notable differences. First, this is the only available app that has been certified by the Custodian of the Book of Common Prayer and whose content conforms with the prayer book. Additionally, eCP contains not only the services and material from the prayer book, but also the full texts of the readings appointed in the lectionary.

eCP is intended to be a framework for accessing the liturgical materials of the Episcopal Church. So, much more material will be added to eCP in future updates that is not available anywhere else. This includes resources such as Holy Women, Holy Men, Enriching Our Worship, the Book of Occasional Services and other material not in the public domain.

This means that, as it grows, eCP will provide the most comprehensive collection of authorized liturgical materials of any other app that might be out there. As the denominational publisher of the Episcopal Church, Church Publishing is committed to making these resources available in an increasingly mobile world.
